New expanded Queensland regional statistics publication

Which area has the least crime in Queensland? How many people receive disability support pensions? Which areas have the highest incomes?

For the answers to these and hundreds of other fascinating questions about Queensland turn to the Regional Statistics, Queensland 1999 publication, released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The publication includes information down to local council level.

New features in the publication include crime, income data and social security statistics.

Old favourites brought together from a range of ABS sources include: area, population, age, births and deaths, building statistics, tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, new motor vehicle registrations and schools.

Some examples from the publication:
  • Crime rates for unlawful entry with intent were highest in the North-West Statistical Division and in the south east corner of the State - Brisbane and Moreton Statistical Divisions. The lowest crime rates for unlawful entry with intent, drug offences and motor vehicle offences were recorded in the Central West Statistical Division.
  • Highest taxable income were recorded in Broadsound, Belyando and Nebo all within the Mackay Statistical Division. Wide Bay-Burnett Statistical Division recorded the 3 shires with the lowest individual taxable income Eidsvold, Monto and Perry.
  • Highest annual population growth to June 1999 was recorded in Miriam Vale with 5 per cent, other local government areas experiencing strong population growth are Noosa 4.2%, Crow's Nest 3.5 per cent Gold Coast 3.4 per cent and Thuringowa with 3.3 per cent. Population declines of more than 2 per cent were recorded in Perry, Isisford, Monto, Mount Morgan and Broadsound.
  • Areas with the highest median age were Perry 47 years, Mount Morgan and Biggenden 43.5 years. Torres had the lowest median age at 22.8 years followed by Burke 25.4 years, Aurukun 25.7 years and Mornington 26.9 years.
