Increase in persons serving community-based corrections orders

There were 59,992 persons in community-based corrections in the September quarter 2015, an increase of seven per cent (3,923 persons) from the September quarter 2014, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

"The number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in community-based corrections increased by four per cent (or 425 persons) from the September quarter 2014 to 11,780 persons. This represents 20 per cent of the overall community-based corrections population," said William Milne from the ABS.

The most common order types were sentenced probation and parole, accounting for 82% of persons in community-based corrections. There were 35,798 persons serving sentenced probation and 13,067 persons serving parole in the September quarter 2015," said Mr Milne.
