2006 Census supports NATSI Children's Day

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Children’s Day, held on August 4, celebrates the importance of children to Indigenous communities.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is a proud sponsor of the NATSI Children’s Day event in Sydney on Friday August 4. The Census aims to accurately measure the population of our Indigenous communities and this year the 2006 Census will be on Tuesday August 8.

With the 2006 Census of Population and Housing less than one week away, a range of high profile Indigenous figures have lent their support to a campaign aimed at making indigenous Australians count. Taking part are Anthony and Tony Mundine, Michael O’Loughlin and Adam Goodes from the Sydney Swans, Casey Donovan, Dean Widders from the Parramatta Eels and Amos Roberts from the Roosters.

Glenda Roberts, State Indigenous Manager, for the 2006 Census, states that it is important for all Indigenous people to stand up an be counted in this years Census.

“The Census provides a voice for all Indigenous people, to vote you have to be 18, but with the Census everyone counts."

“We wanted to raise awareness that the Census is a government activity which directly affects the lives of every Indigenous person in the country. An undercount in the Census will affect levels of funding for community programs and services."

“The support of these seven people has been amazing and I know that it will encourage Indigenous people to be counted this Census."

Ms Roberts will deliver a speech today with the support of Tony Mundine encouraging all people of ATSI background to stand up and be counted on Tuesday the 8th of August.
