Year Book for release tomorrow - ABS

1999 Year Book Australia, the 81st edition of this premier Australian reference work, will be released tomorrow by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The year book provides a comprehensive overview of the economic and social conditions of contemporary and historical Australia. The content is drawn from a wide range of ABS surveys and analyses and includes information contributed by a number of other government organisations.

Since 1908 the year book has developed a reputation as one of the best single reference works on Australia. The data and explanations are of interest and use to many sectors of the Australian community which rely on good quality information to make informed decisions. Schools also find the year book a very useful teaching tool.

In keeping with the custom of featuring photographs of outstanding Australian landscapes on the year book's cover, the 1999 edition features a scene from The Pinnacles in Western Australia.

Special Articles and mini features contained in the book are:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians - a statistical profile from the 1996 Census (Chapter 5)
Activity patterns of people with a disability or who are principal carers (Chapter 7)
Older Australians (Chapter 7)
The family home - value and equity (Chapter 8)
Household investors in rental dwellings (Chapter 8)
Mental health of Australian adults (Chapter 9)
