Producer Price Indexes to be combined in new ABS publications

The Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) range of producer price indexes will be consolidated in two new quarterly titles, commencing with the release of data for the June quarter 2001 on Friday (20 July) and next Monday (23 July).

Australian Statistician Dennis Trewin, said the new format would result in producer price index data being more integrated, allowing easier interpretation of the data.

"This restructure, by providing a new focus for the producer price indexes, will enable users to better understand price pressures as they impact on the producing sectors of the economy," he said.

"One publication will contain the international trade price indexes and the other will contain the remaining producer price indexes. The headline indicators of the new producer price indexes publication will be the recently established economy-wide stage of production indexes, reflecting the wider scope of these indexes in comparison to manufacturing sector price indexes which have historically been the headline producer price indexes. All information presently published will continue to be available."

Classifications have been standardised to allow easier comparison on a terms of trade basis. Both indexes will also be published using ABS balance of payments classifications. The June quarter 2001 release of this publication will be on Friday 20 July.
