ABS fun run to raise funds for firies

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is calling for the Canberra community to join them in supporting the Volunteer Firefighters of the ACT by taking part in this year's annual ABS Fun Run, being run around Lake Ginninderra, at 12:30pm on 28 May 2003.

Each year the event attracts a large number of participants and Fun Run Committee Chair Peter Harper, hopes that this year will be no exception.

"It's a top event for serious competitors but also a great outing for those who are there to enjoy the scenery and fresh air, and get a bit of exercise," said Peter.

"This year all the proceeds from the run will go to the Volunteer Brigades Association of the ACT to support the operations and development of Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Services brigades in the ACT.

"The run is a good chance for individual members of the community to do something by way of thanks to the volunteers who worked so hard and so bravely during the bushfires."

Entrants may run, jog, or walk the 7.3 km course around the cyclepaths of Lake Ginninderra's parkland, with the start/finish line at John Knight Park, adjacent to Lake Ginninderra College. Incorporating the Castles Shield Fun Run, trophies will be awarded for both individual and team efforts.

The run has attracted a wide range of sponsors and all participants will have a chance to win barrel draw prizes. The major sponsor is Westfield Belconnen. Other sponsors include: Six Continents Hotels/Holiday Inn at Darling Harbour, Mallamaurice Holiday Units, Mallacoota, Barlings Beach Caravan Park, Deep Water Fishing Charters, Malua Bay Dive, The Runners Shop, Pirion Printers, ABS Social Club, Canberra Labour Club, Instant Colour Press, Calyspo Coffee Lounge, Video Ezy, Qantas, Goodberry's, Rock Salt and Privileges.

Cost to enter the run is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for school children.
