Ecensus: the next step

Five internationally respected Information Technology companies have succeeded to the next step of helping the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) develop the eCensus Internet form for the 2006 Census of Population and Housing.

The companies: CSC Australia Pty Ltd; EDS Australia Pty Ltd; IBM Global Services Australia Ltd; Sun Microsystems Australia Pty Ltd; and Telstra Corp Ltd have been invited to respond to a detailed Request for Proposals as part of the next stage in the selection process.

More than 30 high quality responses were received from around the country as part of the eCensus Request for Expressions of Interest process carried out in July 2003.

David Nauenburg, Director of Census Development said that the ABS was very pleased with the calibre of respondents to the eCensus Request for Expressions of Interest.

"The level of interest the IT industry has shown in this project was evident in the quality of the submissions lodged with the ABS. I would like to think that they saw the eCensus for what it is; an exciting and very rewarding challenge," he said.

"These five companies were selected following the evaluation of the expressions of interest, and we believe they are very capable companies. We look forward to seeing their detailed proposals for making the eCensus a reality."

"We would like to thank all of those groups who took the time and effort to lodge submissions with the ABS."

The outcomes of the Request for Proposal process are expected to be announced early in 2004.

The ABS seeks an industry partner with the experience and expertise to help develop the complete eCensus solution. This solution will cover form development and the provision of infrastructure (including hardware and communications).
