2001 Census @ your library

From today, more than 700 libraries will provide Australians with access to the latest information from the 2001 Census of Population and Housing through the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) free electronic resource tool, CLIB 2001: Census @ your Library.

CLIB 2001 provides high quality census data on Australian communities free of charge to public libraries, TAFE and university libraries, the Commonwealth and State Parliamentary libraries and the National and State libraries. More than 600 librarians around the country are booked in for CLIB 2001 training sessions with the ABS.

Ms Kim Farley-Larmour, National Manager for the ABS Library Extension Program said, "The enthusiasm shown by librarians is only an indication of how much demand this tool will have in the community".

"By having Australian demographic data at their fingertips, library users can access a wealth of information on their community such as; families, marital status, age, education, housing, income, ethnicity, computer usage, religion and much more", she said.

On CD-ROM, CLIB 2001 contains more than 800,000 detailed tables of census data and 7,000 map pages from the Basic Community Profiles, Indigenous Profiles and first release Classification Counts. It is also offered for the first time to libraries as a limited access Internet-based product.

"CLIB 2001 is the most user friendly library resource tool we've provided to the Australian community. We wanted to provide people with access to census information quickly and simply and this was an important factor in the development of the sophisticated software behind CLIB 2001", said Ms Farley-Larmour.

"The ABS is committed to giving back to the community as much census information as possible. This is our way of saying thank you for participating in this vital national project", she said.

Director-General of the National Library, Jan Fullerton, and the Australian Statistician, Dennis Trewin will host a reception at the National Library on Monday 21 October 2002 at 4.30pm to mark the launch of CLIB 2001.
