Beautiful one day, perfect the next: Queensland population soars Queensland was the fastest growing of all states and territories in Australia in 1999, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today. The estimated resident population of Queensland was 3,536,300 people on 31 December 1999, 19% of Australia's population. The population of Queensland grew at a rate of 1.6% from 1998 to 1999, the highest rate of growth for all states and territories and considerably higher than the Australian rate of 1.1%. Queensland also had the highest net interstate migration figure of all the States and Territories with 17,585 people coming into the state. There were 46,503 births registered in 1999, a decrease of 1% on 1998. The total fertility rate fell to 1.76 children per female in 1999, continuing a long-term decline. This is slightly above the national rate of 1.74. The average age of mothers was 28.9 years compared to the national median of 29.7. Ex-nuptial births represented 34% of all births registered in Queensland in 1999. This compares to a much lower proportion of 24% recorded back in 1989. For Australia the 1999 proportion was 29%. There were 22,416 marriages registered in Queensland in 1999, an increase of 5% on 1998 and this was the largest number registered in the last 10 years. The average age for first marriages in Queensland in 1999 was 28.0 years for males and 26.1 years for females. Marriages performed in civil ceremonies continued to outnumber those performed by ministers of religion in 1999. Civil ceremonies comprised 55% of total marriage ceremonies in 1999, compared with 42% in 1989. In 1999, there were 11,467 divorces granted in Queensland, a 1% increase from the number granted in 1998. The crude divorce rate was 3.3 per 1,000 population in 1999, the highest rate recorded in all States and Territories, and above the Australian figure of 2.8.
