Shedding more light on National Accounts

Broader measures of progress other than Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are explored in a new ABS publication released today, aimed at shedding more light on the national accounts.

The publication, Spotlight on National Accounts, aims to increase the understanding of national accounts and how it links into other ABS statistics with short snippets of analysis focusing on a particular theme.

This first issue looks at broader measures of progress such as environment and social factors. It introduces various measures of economic performance currently published in the national accounts and provides links to other work that brings in environmental and social factors to provide broad indicators of progress.

Future issues of Spotlight on National Accounts will explore:
  • current economic events and provide statistical information on their underlying causes
  • the nuts and bolts of national accounts and related ABS statistics
  • improvements to concepts, sources and methods used in the National Accounts.

Spotlight on National Accounts is a web-based publication and will be released on an irregular basis. Being web-based it will allow the publication to hyperlink to more detailed information available on the ABS web site. It is anticipated that over the next 12 months there will be four to six releases of Spotlight on National Accounts.
