Create your own Australian population clock

You can now create your very own ticking Australian population clock for your website or application. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has developed a web service that generates the latest population data and algorithm to allow developers to create a population clock similar to the one on the ABS website.

ABS Director of Customer Insights & Strategies, Richard Burgess said, “Our population figures have always been among the most popular on the ABS website. When the estimated Australian population clicked over to 23 million last year, there were thousands of people watching it. The web service will allow others to re-create the ABS pop clock on their website or application.”

The ABS Population Clock is a RESTful web service. It provides a simple alternative method of downloading population figures, as well as a population projection, for the specific purpose of producing a “population clock” for Australia.

The Population Clock web service is based on the latest Estimated Resident Population (ERP) figures published on the ABS website in the latest release of Australian Demographic Statistics (ABS Cat. No. 3101.0). The data in the web service are sourced from ABS’s free interactive data query tool ABS.Stat.

“We are eager to get peoples feedback on our new web service and for more development ideas,” Mr Burgess said. “The best place to do that is through our ABS BetaWorks blog.”

For more information, you can access the web service at http://bit.ly/1rIUKOz or learn more through the Population Clock Web Service, User Guide (ABS Cat. No. 1420.0.55.001).
