Broad Description
Profit and loss (financial) statement and balance sheet information for all industries (excluding General Government).

Purpose of Data
To provide financial statistics, including aggregates and ratios, based on profit and loss statements and balance sheet accounts of businesses in all industries of the Australian economy.

Detailed Description
Population
The survey frame for the Economic Activity Survey included all survey units (ie. management units) which operated for some time between 1 July 1995 and 30 June 1996 and were not considered to be part of the General Government sector.
Superannuation Data Items
The Economic Activity Survey collects detailed income and expenditure items and broad level asset and liability information. Information on employer contributions to superannuation funds is also collected across all industries (although these data are not published). As data are only available at the subdivision level of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), separate data for the superannuation industry are not available (ie they are included with data for the insurance industry).

Source
Compiled from information collected by the ABS from the Economic Activity Survey.

Method of Collection
The Economic Activity Survey covers over 22,000 management units. Due to the stratification used by the ABS, the number of superannuation entities covered is not known. Non-employers are excluded from the scope of the survey.

Frequency
Annual.

Timeliness
Data becomes available within 12 months of the end of the reference period.

Historical Data
Annual data from 1990/91 is available.

Geographic Breakdown
Data available for Australia only.

Confidentiality and Availability
Data are subject to confidentiality restrictions under the Census and Statistics Act 1905. Data are only available at the subdivision level of the ANZSIC. This means that superannuation statistics are included with the Insurance industry.

Unpublished Information
Unpublished data may be available on request subject to the confidentiality restrictions above and quality checks. Contact Dianne Bourke, Client Services Manager, Economy Wide Statistics on (02) 6252 5288.
