Purpose
To measure the size and structure of the construction industry and to enable government departments, especially the Department of Industry, Science and Tourism to understand the nature of the industry.

Description
The Construction Industry Survey (CIS) was conducted three times prior to the 1996-97 survey. The 1996-97 survey is mainly concentrating on the residential sector of the construction industry. A sample of about 20,000 businesses were selected from the ABS Register of Businesses and Australian Taxation Office list. Non-residential construction information is being collected by the Economic Activity Survey and will be merged with the results of the CIS to provide overall estimates for the entire construction industry.

Data are collected by mail questionnaire.

Data Detail
Prior to the collection for 1996-97, the CIS was last conducted in respect of the 1988-89 financial year.

For the private sector construction establishments in the 1988-89 collection, data were collected on:

  • Summary of operations by industry class;
  • Selected characteristics by employment size and by turnover size;
  • Selected operating ratios by industry class;
  • On-site employment by occupation, by industry group; and
  • Value of construction work done by contract type, by industry class.

In association with the 1988-89 CIS, a Public Sector CIS was collected. For enterprises in this collection, data were collected on:
  • On-site employees by construction activity and by occupation;
  • Construction and repair maintenance expenditure, by type of work;
  • Building construction expenditure by type of work; and
  • Engineering construction expenditure by type of work.

Data from the 1988-89 collection which are relevant to transport include new and repair work on roads, highways, bridges, railways and harbours. With the scope of the 1996-97 CIS restricted to residential construction and trades services, these data will not be available from the 1996-97 collection. Users requiring recent data on value of work done on roads, bridges, railways and harbours should refer to Engineering Construction Activity (cat. no. 8762.0).

Geographic Coverage

Frequency of Data Availability
Data release is irregular. The survey is conducted about every five years. Preliminary results from the 1996-97 survey was released in September 1998, and final results will be released in January 1999.
