    Purpose
    To provide information on the causes of death as a basis for research by medical and health professionals.

    Description
    Causes of death data are provided by the Registrar of Birth, Deaths and Marriages in each State and Territory. The information supplied to the ABS is that contained in medical certificates of causes of death prepared by the certifying medical practitioner.

  • Causes of death;
  • Number of deaths;
  • Age at death;
  • Country of birth and duration of residence;
  • Infant deaths;
  • Deaths of indigenous people; and
  • Year of deaths;

    In relation to transport, data are available for motor vehicle traffic accidents and motor vehicle non-traffic accidents, other road vehicle accidents, railway accidents, water transport accidents and air and space transport accidents.

    Geographic Coverage
    Australia, States and Territories down to SLA level.

    Frequency of Data Availability
    Causes of death data are usually collected from Registrar of Deaths every month. Data are released annually (calendar year basis).

    Historical Data
    Causes of death statistics have been produced since the early 1900s and are available electronically from 1964.
