2014-15 KEY INDUSTRY POINTS

  • The estimates in this publication cover the performance of selected industries compiled from the annual Economic Activity Survey (EAS). For more information about the scope and coverage of the EAS please refer to paragraphs 6-21 of the Explanatory Notes in this issue.
  • The Health care and social assistance (private) industry in 2014-15 had strong growth across all key data items. Sales and service income grew by 13.8% to $84.2b and industry value added (IVA) grew by 12.8% to $76.7b. Employment for this industry increased by approximately 51,000 people (5%), with wages and salaries increasing by 10.3% to $46.5b. This industry has seen strong demand for its products and services from Australia's ageing population in recent years.
  • The Construction industry also showed positive growth in IVA, increasing by $8.2b (7.6%), with similar growth in sales and service income increasing by $26.3b (7.4%). The largest contribution to this growth has been from residential construction activity.
  • In contrast the industries that showed the largest declines were Mining and Manufacturing with falls in sales and service income of $8.5b (-3.9%) and $7.9b (-2%) respectively.
