JULY KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend - The July 2008 trend estimate for new motor vehicle sales (86 772) decreased 0.7% when compared with June 2008. The trend estimate has continued to decrease since January 2008. When compared with July 2007 the trend estimate decreased by 0.6%.
  • Seasonally adjusted - The July 2008 estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (85 411) decreased by 3.4% compared with June 2008.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend - When comparing July 2008 with June 2008, trend estimates decreased for sports utility vehicles, 2.2%, passenger vehicles, 0.2%, and other vehicles, 1.0%. When compared with the same period 12 months ago, passenger vehicles fell by 2.1%, sports utility vehicles by 1.1% and other vehicles rose by 4.2%.
  • Seasonally adjusted - When comparing July 2008 with June 2008, sports utility vehicles and passenger vehicles decreased by 11.9% and 2.1% respectively, while other vehicles increased by 1.2%.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend - When comparing July 2008 with June 2008, all of the states and territories showed decreases in the trend estimate of total sales of new motor vehicles. The largest decreases were in Tasmania, 1.5%, and Queensland, 1.1%.
  • Seasonally adjusted - When comparing July 2008 to June 2008, four of the states showed decreases. The largest decreases were in Victoria, 5.0%, Queensland, 4.4%, and New South Wales, 4.3%. The Northern Territory and Tasmania showed the greatest increases of 6.4% and 4.7% respectively.
