The Publication

This publication presents monthly information on sales of new motor vehicles in each state/territory in original, seasonally adjusted and trend estimated terms. The original data are sourced from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Sales data are available for passenger vehicles, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), other vehicles and total vehicles at the state/territory and national levels.

OCTOBER 2006 KEY POINTS

Trend

The trend estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles continues to increase. The October 2006 trend estimate (81,145) increased 0.4% compared with the September 2006 estimate.

All vehicles recorded an increase from September 2006 to October 2006. Passenger vehicles have now shown six consecutive months of trend increases.

All states and territories except for Queensland and South Australia showed a positive monthly percentage change in their trend estimates from September 2006 to October 2006.

Seasonally adjusted

The October 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (81,520) is stable compared to the September 2006 estimate (81,556).

The Northern Territory had the largest increase (9.4%) with New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania showing slight increases. All remaining states and territories showed decreases in seasonally adjusted estimates.

Over this period, 'passenger' vehicles were the only vehicle type to decrease (down 1.8%). Other vehicles rose 2.1% and sports utility vehicles rose 3.8%.

TREND REVISIONS

Trend estimates are likely to be revised when new seasonally adjusted estimates become available. For further information, see Explanatory Notes, paragraphs 11 and 12.

The graph below presents the effect of two possible scenarios on the previous trend estimates.

1The November 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate of total vehicle sales is higher than the October 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate by 3.6%.
2The November 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate of total vehicle sales is lower than the October 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate by 3.6%.

The percentage change of 3.6% was chosen because the average absolute percentage change over the last 10 years has been 3.6%.
