SEPTEMBER KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend estimates: September 2012 trend estimate (95 746) has increased by 1.2% when compared with August 2012.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: The September 2012 seasonally adjusted estimate for new motor vehicle sales (98 701) increased by 4.7% when compared with August 2012.
  • In trend terms, September 2012 has been another record high month of sales for new motor vehicles.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend estimates: When comparing national trend estimates for September 2012 with August 2012, sales of Passenger, Sports utility and Other vehicles have increased by 0.6%, 1.5% and 1.9% respectively.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for September 2012 with August 2012, sales of Passenger, Sports utility vehicles and Other vehicles have increased by 6.5%, 4.2% and 1.1% respectively.


SALES BY STATE
  • In trend terms, seven of the eight states and territories experienced an increase for new motor vehicle sales when comparing September 2012 with August 2012. Tasmania recorded the largest percentage increase (2.5%), followed by Victoria (1.5%) and Queensland (1.1%). Over the same period, the Northern Territory was the only state to experience a decrease (0.7%). This was the Northern Territory's first decrease since January 2012.
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, all eight states and territories experienced an increase in new motor vehicle sales when comparing September 2012 with August 2012. Tasmania recorded the largest percentage increase with (23.4%), followed by Victoria (7.0%) and Western Australia (4.8%).

DATA NOTES

The flooding which occurred in Thailand in from June 2011 may have had an impact on new vehicle sales in Australia due to associated delays in delivery of Thai manufactured vehicles and vehicle parts. The impacts from the flooding is no longer affecting the supply of new motor vehicles to Australia from Thailand.
