JANUARY KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend estimates: The January 2015 trend estimate (92 219) has decreased by 0.1% when compared with December 2014.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: The January 2015 seasonally adjusted estimate (93 104) has decreased by 1.5% when compared with December 2014.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend estimates: When comparing national trend estimates for January 2015 with December 2014, sales of Sports utility and Other vehicles increased by 0.1% and 1.0% respectively. Over the same period, Passenger vehicles decreased by 0.7%.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for January 2015 with December 2014, all vehicle categories recorded a decrease in sales. Other vehicles recorded the largest decrease (3.1%) while sales for Passenger and Sports utility vehicles decreased by 0.6% and 1.6% respectively.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend estimates: Six of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease in new motor vehicle sales when comparing January 2015 with December 2014. Western Australia recorded the largest percentage decrease (0.9%), followed by both South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory (0.6%). Over the same period, Tasmania recorded the largest increase in sales of 2.2%.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: Five of the states and territories experienced a decrease in new motor vehicle sales when comparing January 2015 with December 2014. The Northern Territory recorded the largest percentage decrease (12.9%) followed by Queensland (4.5%) and Victoria (1.3%). Tasmania recorded the largest increase in sales of 15.4%.
