PRELIMINARY KEY POINTS
  • The gross value of wheat increased 7% to $7.7 billion. This increase is reflective of strong domestic demand and increased production, driven from Western Australia.
  • The large drop in sorghum production resulted in a gross value of $382 million, down 32%, despite strong domestic demand as a result of dry conditions in eastern Australia.
  • Following record production and gross value in 2012-13, the gross value of canola fell 14% to $2.0 billion as a result of reduced domestic production.
  • The gross value of sheep and lambs increased by 19% to $2.6 billion. This increase reflected large numbers of stock being turned-off due to widespread dry conditions, as well as a fall in lamb supply due to the depletion of breeding ewe numbers.
