POPULATION

At the end of June 2002 the estimated resident population of the Northern Territory was 198,000 (1.0% of the Australian population), comprising 103,700 males and 94,300 females.

The majority of people in the Northern Territory (117,900 or 59.5%) lived in the three major urban centres of Darwin City SSD, Palmerston-East Arm SSD and Alice Springs (T). A further 6.0% (11,800) lived in the smaller urban areas of Katherine (T) and Tennant Creek (T), and 7.9% (15,700) lived in Litchfield Shire SSD.

By SSD, the greatest proportion of people lived in Darwin City SSD (34.5%), followed by Central NT SSD (19.6%) which includes Alice Springs (T).

SEX DISTRIBUTION

The sex ratio for the Northern Territory at June 2002 was 110 males for every 100 females. At the end of June 2002, males outnumbered females in all but 5 out of 64 NT SLAs: Tiwi, Moulden, Woodroffe, Alice Springs (T) - Larapinta and Sandover - Balance. The highest ratio of males to females occurred in the SLAs of East Arm (which includes a detention centre) with 1,414 males per 100 females, Litchfield (S) - Part A (which includes the Robertson Army Barracks) with 354 males per 100 females, and Winnellie (a light industrial area) with 184 males per 100 females.

AGE DISTRIBUTION

Over the last 10 years the age structure of the Northern Territory's population has remained quite different from that of the total Australian population. At the end of June 2002 the Northern Territory had the highest proportion of people aged 14 years and under of any State or Territory (25.7% compared with 20.3% nationally). The Northern Territory also had the highest proportion of people aged 20-34 years compared with any State or Territory (26.3% compared with 21.5% nationally). In contrast it had the lowest proportion of people aged 65 years and over (3.9% compared with 12.7% nationally)

The SLA of Daly had the highest proportion of people aged 14 years and under (35.3%), followed by West Arnhem (34.9%), Sandover - Balance (34.85%) and East Arnhem - Balance (34.5%). These SLAs have large proportions of Indigenous people. Of the urban SLAs, the Palmerston suburbs of Moulden (34.3%) and Durack (33.7%) had the highest proportion in this age group.


The highest proportion of people aged between 20-34 years was in Litchfield (S) - Part A (57.9%) due largely to the presence of the Robertson Army Barracks.
The second highest proportion in this age group was 54.2% in the SLA of East Arm, which includes a detention centre, followed by Darwin City - Remainder (39.1%), Bakewell (37.2%), Petermann (36.6%), Alice Springs (T) - Stuart (36.5%) and Brinkin (35.9%).

The SLAs with the highest proportion of people aged 65 years and over were again concentrated predominately within the Darwin SD. The Gardens (11.4%), which includes a nursing home and Coconut Grove (9.8%), containing a seniors' village and a number of other aged care facilities, had the highest proportions in Darwin. The highest proportion of people aged 65 years and over outside of Darwin was in Alice Springs (T) - Heavitree (9.4%).
