FEBRUARY KEY POINTS


SUSPENSION OF TREND ESTIMATES
  • The retail trade trend series have been suspended as at November 2008 as it is not possible to determine the trend in retail turnover through the period affected by the Federal Government Economic Security Strategy Package and other influences associated with global economic conditions. For further details refer to the December 2008 issue of this publication.


AUSTRALIA
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate decreased by 2.0% in February 2009. This follows a revised increase of 0.5% in January 2009 and an increase of 3.8% in December 2008.
  • In original terms, Australian turnover decreased by 12.9% in February 2009 compared with January 2009. Chains and other large retailers (which are completely enumerated) decreased by 16.3%, while the estimate for 'smaller' retailers decreased by 6.6%. Australian turnover increased by 0.5% in February 2009 compared with February 2008. Chains and other large retailers increased by 3.2%, while the estimate for 'smaller' retailers decreased by 3.5%.


INDUSTRIES
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, all industries had a decrease in February 2009 - Food retailing (-0.4%), Department stores (-9.8%), Clothing and soft good retailing (-2.7%), Household good retailing (-3.8%), Other retailing (-0.3%) and Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (-1.3%).


STATES
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, all states other than Tasmania (+1.3%) had a decrease in February 2009 - New South Wales (-2.4%), Victoria (-1.3%), Queensland (-2.2%), South Australia (-2.4%), Western Australia (-2.7%), Northern Territory (-0.1%) and the Australian Capital Territory (-0.5%).

REVISIONS

Revisions have been applied to the January 2009 original estimates for the Supermarkets and grocery stores and Cafes and restaurants industry subgroups for Victoria. These revisions result from a review of data provided by survey respondents for February. In addition, there were minor revisions to data at the industry subgroup by state level. As a result, the seasonally adjusted estimates for January 2009 have also been revised.
