Gender Indicators, Australia presents a summary of gender-specific data in six areas of social concern for gender equality: Economic Security, Education, Health, Work and Family Balance, Safety and Justice, and Democracy, Governance and Citizenship. It has been developed to provide a central access point to explore differences in these domains for women and men in Australia, and also to provide a broad basis for social analysis and research in the field of gender.

The Gender Indicators product features a total of 52 indicators, each with a Key Series, and many with related supporting measures.

This release includes the following data updates:

  • 15 tables in the Economic Security domain have been updated and revised with data relating to labour force, employment conditions, underutilised labour and people not in the labour force. The data has been sourced from the 2015-16 Labour Force Survey. The presentation and scope of the superannuation coverage tables have also been revised.
  • The Education domain has had eight tables updated with data from the most recent National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey (2014-15). The updated indicators relate to the attainment of Year 12 formal qualifications at Certificate II or above, non-school qualifications, and participation and retention rates.
  • There are 15 tables in the Health domain which have been updated. Data for death rates relating to specific causes have been updated from the 2014 Causes of Death publication (cat. no. 3303.0), and from various Australian Institute of Health and Welfare sources. A new mental health table has also been added to complement the 2007 prevalence data provided in tables 10 and 11 - "Long-term mental and behavioural conditions" (Table 12). This has been sourced from the 2014-15 National Health Survey: First Results (cat. no. 4364.0.55.001).
  • The Safety and Justice domain has had six tables updated with data for the indicators on experiences of crime from the 2014-15 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey and Crime Victimisation Survey. Also provided are administrative recorded crime data for selected offences in 2015, and 2014-15 offender rates.
  • Four tables in the Democracy, Governance and Citizenship domain have been updated with data on Justices and Judges (Table 7), together with nominations and recipients of the Order of Australia awards for 2016 (Tables 8-10).

Where appropriate, time series data are now presented with a maximum of 10 years (e.g. 2006 to 2016) for ease of navigation. Data prior to 2006 is still available in previous releases.
