MARCH KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • The March 2012 trend estimate (87 286) has increased by 0.6% when compared with February 2012.
  • Seasonally Adjusted - The March 2012 seasonally adjusted estimate for new motor vehicle sales (89 694) increased by 4.0% when compared with February 2012.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • When comparing national trend estimates for March 2012 with February 2012, sales of Passenger and Sports utility vehicles increased by 0.1% and 1.9% respectively. Over the same period sales of Other vehicles decreased by 7 units.
  • Seasonally Adjusted - When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for March 2012 with February 2012, sales of Passenger, Sports utility and Other vehicles increased by 3.3%, 7.5% and 1.4% respectively.


SALES BY STATE
  • Five of the eight states and territories have experienced an increase in the trend estimate for new motor vehicle sales when comparing March 2012 with February 2012. South Australia recorded the largest percentage increase (1.6%), followed by the Western Australia (1.2%) and Victoria (1.1%). Sales in the Australian Capital Territory have decreased by 0.8% over the same period.
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, sales of new motor vehicles increased in all eight states and territories when comparing March 2012 with February 2012. The Australian Capital Territory recorded the largest percentage increase, with 9.5%, followed by the Northern Territory (8.3%) and South Australia (6.9%).

Recent flooding in Thailand may have had an impact on new vehicle sales in Australia due to associated delays in delivery of Thai manufactured vehicles and vehicle parts. Impacts from the flooding could continue to disrupt the supply of new motor vehicles to Australia from Thailand in coming months.
