FEBRUARY KEY POINTS

TREND ESTIMATES

  • The trend estimate for pig slaughterings fell for the ninth consecutive month, to 449,100. The industry reported continuing pressure from pork imports which were at record levels and from a strong Australian dollar which is reducing export viability.
  • The trend estimate for sheep slaughterings rose for the sixth consecutive month, to 920,800 but is still significantly below the levels of recent years.
  • The trend estimate for lamb slaughterings rose for the sixth consecutive month, to 1.4 million. A combination of limited supply and strong competition for trade weight lambs is driving a buoyant market.
