VALUE OF CONSTRUCTION WORK DONE, VOLUME TERMS

Trend estimates

  • The trend estimate for the value of total engineering construction work done rose 0.6% in the December 2004 quarter. This is the fifteenth consecutive quarterly rise.
  • The trend estimate for the value of work done for the private sector rose 0.7% in the December 2004 quarter. Work done for the public sector rose 0.1% in the December quarter.

Seasonally adjusted estimates
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for the value of total engineering construction work done in the December 2004 quarter fell 0.7%, to $6,927.8m after four quarters of growth.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for the value of work done for the private sector rose 5.3%, to $3,966.2m, in the December 2004 quarter after two consecutive quarters of decline. The value of work done for the public sector fell 7.8% to $2,961.6m.

Original estimates
  • The value of work done in the December 2004 quarter rose 4.2%, to $7,112.8m. This is the second highest level reported after the record high of $7,217.8m in June 2004.
  • The value of work done for the private sector rose 5.9%, to $4,126.5m in the December quarter 2004. Work done for the public sector rose 2.0%, to $2,986.3m, following a 12.9% fall in the September 2004 quarter.

SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS QUARTER

Compared with the current price original terms estimates published in the previous issue of this publication:

  • The June quarter estimates have been revised downwards by $4.8m for work commenced, $7.4m for work done and have been revised upwards by $1.1m for work yet to be done.
  • The September quarter estimates have been revised upwards by $66.6m for work commenced, $23.2m for work done and $2.8m for work yet to be done.

NEW SOUTH WALES

The trend estimate for the value of work done has grown for ten consecutive quarters, with the rate of growth slowing in recent quarters.


VICTORIA

The trend estimate for the value of work done declined in the past two quarters after a period of growth since the September quarter 2001.


QUEENSLAND

After being in decline in the June and September quarters 2003, the trend estimate has shown growth over the past four quarters.


SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The trend estimate for work done increased marginally in the September 2004 quarter following four quarters of decline.


WESTERN AUSTRALIA
