DECEMBER QTR KEY POINTS


ESTABLISHED HOUSE PRICES

Quarterly Changes

  • Preliminary estimates show the price index for established houses in Australia increased 0.9% in the December quarter 2006, compared with an increase of 2.1% in the September quarter 2006.
  • House prices rose in Brisbane (+3.0%), Darwin (+3.0%), Adelaide (+2.6%), Perth (+1.7%), Canberra (+1.7%), Melbourne (+1.5%) and Hobart (+0.2%), and fell in Sydney (-1.0%).
  • The movement in the established house price index between June and September quarters 2006 has been revised from the first estimate, an increase of 2.2%, to an increase of 2.1%.

Annual Changes (December quarter 2005 to December quarter 2006)
  • Over the twelve months to December quarter 2006, preliminary estimates show that established house prices rose 8.3%.
  • Annually, house prices rose in Perth (+36.9%), Darwin (+17.6%), Canberra (+9.2%), Melbourne (+8.1%), Brisbane (+7.1%), Hobart (+7.1%) and Adelaide (+6.4%), and fell slightly in Sydney (-0.1%).
  • The movement in the established house price index between September quarters 2005 and 2006 has been revised from the first estimate, an increase of 9.5%, to an increase of 9.7%.
