AUGUST KEY POINTS


BALANCE ON GOODS AND SERVICES
  • The trend estimate of the balance on goods and services was a deficit of $1,722m in August 2009, an increase of $436m (34%) on a revised deficit in July 2009.
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, the balance on goods and services was a deficit of $1,524m in August 2009, a decrease of $259m (15%) on a revised deficit in July 2009.


CREDITS (EXPORTS OF GOODS & SERVICES)
  • Seasonally adjusted, goods and services credits fell $357m (2%) to $19,325m. Non-rural goods fell $318m (3%) with the coal, coke and briquettes component down $248m (8%), rural goods fell $62m (3%) and non-monetary gold fell $6m (1%). Services credits rose $29m (1%).


DEBITS (IMPORTS OF GOODS & SERVICES)
  • Seasonally adjusted, goods and services debits fell $615m (3%) to $20,849m. Intermediate and other merchandise goods fell $729m (10%) with the fuels and lubricants component down $592m (24%) and consumption goods fell $305m (6%).
  • These falls were partly offset by rises in non-monetary gold, up $300m (118%), capital goods, up $83m (2%) and services debits, up $35m (1%).

This issue introduces estimates on a balance of payments basis compiled according to revised international standards, the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual, sixth edition (BPM6). For further details refer to:
In addition, revisions have been made to incorporate the latest available data relating to merchandise trade from February 2008 and international trade in goods and services from July 2008.

Please note that the Information paper: Implementation of revised international statistical standards in ABS National and International Accounts (cat no. 5310.0.55.002) is scheduled to be released on 14 October 2009.

Table 17, Summary of revisions, has been added to this publication. However the revisions data is not yet available and will be provided from the next issue.
