NOVEMBER 2000 KEY FIGURES
NOVEMBER 2000 KEY POINTS
Preliminary Average Weekly Earnings statistics are being discontinued, and this is the final issue containing these preliminary figures. With the increasing analytical focus on changes in wage rates, more emphasis is being given to the quarterly Wage Cost Index, the release of which will be brought forward each quarter. The Average Weekly Earnings series does not provide a reliable indicator of changes in wage rates, as it is significantly affected by compositional shifts in the workforce. In addition, the preliminary figures are incomplete, and therefore subject to revision when the final figures become available.
The final Average Weekly Earnings statistics will continue to be published quarterly in Average Weekly Earnings, Australia (Cat. no. 6302.0). That publication includes all series contained in this publication, plus a number of additional series for States, Territories and broad industries. It continues to be useful for analysing the average wage bill, and is frequently used for indexation and contract escalation. The November edition of 6302.0 will be released on 1 March 2001, and the February 2001 edition on 17 May 2001, one day after the Wage Cost Index publication.
Users who require a reliable measure of change in wage and salary rates should refer to the quarterly Wage Cost Index series (results published in Catalogue no. 6345.0), which directly measure changes in wage and salary rates each quarter. The March quarter 2001 issue is scheduled for publication on 16 May 2001. For more detail about these series, refer to the Information Paper Wage Cost Index, Australia, 2000 (Catalogue no. 6346.0), copies of which are available from ABS Bookshops and from the ABS website. Further information regarding the cessation of this publication is available in this media release from the ABS website or by contacting Glynis Orrell on Perth 08 9360 5304.
See paragraphs 17-21 of the Explanatory Notes.
