ABOUT THIS RELEASE

Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas 1991 (SEIFA 1991) - Data only product, which provides the five indexes developed by the ABS in .XLS format. The ABS has developed indexes to allow ranking of regions/areas, providing a method of determining the level of social and economic wellbeing in that region.

The five indexes are:
Urban Index of Relative Socio-Economic Advantage

Rural Index of Relative Socio-Economic Advantage
Index of Relative Socio-Economic Disadvantage
Index of Economic Resources
Index of Education and Occupation

These indexes show where the affluent (as opposed to just high income earning) live; where disadvantaged (as opposed to the unemployed) live: and where the highly skilled and educated (as opposed to the tertiary educated people) live.
SEIFA 1991 provides information and rankings for a wide range of geographic areas.
