ABOUT THIS RELEASE

This paper focuses on the data quality of the Census question on occupation and contains information about how various stages in the development and processing of the 2001 Census might have impacted on the data from these questions. Improvements are reported in data quality measures (such as non-response, level of coding, discrepancy rates and automatic coding rates) when compared to the 1996 Census. Data from the 2001 Census on the question on Occupation are compared with the 2001 Labour Force Survey, finding similar results and mirroring the relationship reported in 1996. Finally, this paper provides suggestions for possible improvements in form design and processing, which could result in higher data quality outcomes for the 2006 Census.
