DECEMBER KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES

  • In December quarter 2005, the trend estimate for the number of cattle slaughtered fell by 3% to 1.8 million, the lowest quarterly trend estimate since December quarter 1996.
  • In December quarter 2005, the trend estimate for the number of calves slaughtered rose by 2% to 211,000, the first significant quarterly rise since December 2002.
  • In December quarter 2005, the trend estimate for sheep slaughtered fell by 2% to 2.9 million, the lowest quarterly trend estimate since December quarter 2004.
  • In December quarter 2005, the trend estimate for pigs slaughtered remained steady at 1.3 million.

LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTERED TREND


CATTLE (EXCLUDING CALVES)

The trend estimate for the number of cattle slaughtered in December quarter 2005 fell by 3% to 1.8 million.

The trend estimate for the number of calves slaughtered in December quarter 2005 rose by 2% to 211,000.



SHEEP AND LAMBS

In December quarter 2005, the trend estimate for the number of sheep slaughtered decreased by 2% to 2.9 million. The number of lambs slaughtered decreased slightly to 4.6 million.



PIGS

In December quarter 2005, the trend estimate for the number of pigs slaughtered remained steady at 1.3 million.



MEAT PRODUCTION TREND


BEEF

In December quarter 2005, the trend estimate for beef production fell by 3% to 495,000 tonnes.



MUTTON AND LAMB

In December quarter 2005, the trend estimate for mutton production decreased by 2% to 59,500 tonnes. The trend estimate for lamb production decreased slightly to 93,800 tonnes.



TOTAL RED MEAT

The trend estimate for red meat production fell by 2% to 752,000 tonnes in December quarter 2005.



CHICKEN MEAT

The trend estimate for chicken meat production in December quarter 2005 fell slightly to 190,000 tonnes.

WHOLE MILK INTAKE BY FACTORIES

The trend estimate for whole milk intake by factories in September quarter 2005 remained steady at 2.6 billion litres.



BROKERS AND DEALERS RECEIVALS OF TAXABLE WOOL

The trend estimate for wool receivals by brokers and dealers in December quarter 2005 fell by 3% to 117,000 tonnes.



LIVESTOCK EXPORTS ORIGINAL


EXPORTS OF LIVE SHEEP

Live sheep exports rose by 25% to 1.5million in December quarter 2005. A slight fall in unit value (to$69.18) saw gross value of live sheep exports increase by 23% to $101million.



EXPORTS OF LIVE CATTLE

In December quarter 2005, live cattle exports fell by 35% to 103,000. An 18% increase in unit value (to$719.55) saw the gross value of live cattle exports decrease by 23% to $73.9million.
