SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA, JUNE 2003 PRELIMINARY


Trend estimate

The preliminary trend estimate for June 2003 (337,100) continued to decline since the series peaked in November 2002 (down 19%). Trend estimates are revised as new monthly data become available (refer to paragraphs 15 and 16 of Explanatory Notes).


Seasonally adjusted

The preliminary seasonally adjusted estimate of short-term visitor arrivals to Australia for June 2003 (356,200) represents an increase of 7% compared to the previous month. This is the first monthly increase in the seasonally adjusted series since January 2003 when a monthly increase of 1.5% was experienced. It is the biggest monthly increase since October 2002 (9%).


Original

The preliminary estimate for short-term visitor arrivals to Australia for June 2003 was 306,900. This represents a decrease of 10% compared to June 2002 (339,400). Of the selected countries presented in table 2, compared to June 2002, preliminary estimates indicate an increase in the number of visitors from Korea (up 19%), the Philippines (up 11%) and Indonesia (up 10%). There was a decline in the number of short-term visitors from China (down 52%), Taiwan (down 50%) and Japan (down 42%).
