MARCH KEY POINTS


FINAL DEMAND (EXCL. EXPORTS)
  • fell 0.2% in the March quarter 2016.
  • mainly due to falls in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-16.2%), other agriculture (-6.5%) and pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-3.0%).
  • partly offset by rises in the prices received for motor vehicle and motor vehicle part manufacturing (+1.4%), newspaper, periodical, book and directory publishing (+4.9%) and building construction (+0.2%).
  • rose 1.2% through the year to the March quarter 2016.


INTERMEDIATE DEMAND
  • fell 0.4% in the March quarter 2016.
  • mainly due to falls in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-21.4%), oil and gas extraction (-17.2%) and basic polymer manufacturing (-7.3%).
  • partly offset by rises in the prices received for other agriculture (+2.0%), real estate services (+1.5%) and textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+0.5%).
  • rose 0.8% through the year to the March quarter 2016.


PRELIMINARY DEMAND
  • fell 0.4% in the March quarter 2016.
  • mainly due to falls in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-19.1%), oil and gas extraction (-16.2%) and basic polymer manufacturing (-6.8%).
  • partly offset by rises in the prices received for textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+0.5%), metal ore mining (+5.7%) and meat and meat product manufacturing (+3.8%).
  • rose 0.6% through the year to the March quarter 2016.

CHANGES IN FUTURE ISSUES

From the June quarter 2016, four additional series will be included in the Time Series Spreadsheets. These indexes will be published back to the September quarter 2001, and will be incorporated into the stage of production indexes from June quarter 2016.

Table 21. Output of the Transport, postal and warehousing industries, group and class index numbers will include:
  • 4622 Urban bus transport (including tramway)
  • 4623 Taxi and other road transport
  • 5102 Courier pick-up and delivery services

Table 27. Output of the Other services industries, group and class index numbers will include:
  • 9511 Hairdressing and beauty services

Index numbers for the Output of the construction industries and Input to the house construction industry will be calculated using an updated weighting pattern from the June quarter 2016. As a consequence of the re-weighting, the points contributions for the June quarter 2016 will not be comparable with points contributions from earlier periods.
