AUGUST KEY POINTS

Livestock and meat production monthly trend movements for August 2017:
  • Cattle slaughter increased by 9,050 head (or 1.4%) in August 2017 when compared with July 2017 and there was a year-on-year increase of 67,120 head (or 11.9%).
  • The number of calves slaughtered in August 2017 increased by 1,200 head (or 3.7%) month-on-month and compared to this period last year decreased by 10,900 head (or 24.4%).
  • Sheep slaughter in August 2017 increased by 26,400 head (or 4%) compared with July 2017 and was up 164,200 head (or 31.2%) year-on-year.
  • Lamb slaughters increased by 31,700 head (or 1.7%) for August 2017. Compared with August 2016, slaughters increased by 124,900 head (or 6.9%).
  • Pig slaughter increased during the month, increasing by 4,280 head (or 1.0%) when compared to July 2017 and continued to increase year on year with slaughters up 24,650 head (or 5.8%) on this period last year.
