JANUARY KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend estimates: The January 2013 trend estimate (96 995) has increased by 0.1% when compared with December 2012.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: The January 2013 seasonally adjusted estimate (95 694) decreased by 2.4% when compared with December 2012.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend estimates: When comparing national trend estimates for January 2013 with December 2012, sales of Sports utility vehicles and Other vehicles increased by 0.7% and 0.1% respectively. Over the same period, Passenger vehicle sales decreased by 0.2%.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for January 2013 with December 2012, sales of Sports utility vehicles and Other vehicles increased by 3.8% and 3.5% respectively. Over the same period, Passenger vehicle sales decreased by 8.2%.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend estimates: Six of the eight states and territories experienced an increase for new motor vehicle sales when comparing January 2013 with December 2012. South Australia recorded the largest percentage increase (1.4%), followed by the Australian Capital Territory (1.2%) and then Tasmania (0.9%). Over the same period, Queensland and the Northern Territory decreased by 0.4% and 0.8% respectively.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: Six of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease in new motor vehicle sales when comparing January 2013 with December 2012. The Northern Territory recorded the largest percentage decrease (7.7%), followed by Queensland (4.8%) and New South Wales (3.5%). Over the same period, Tasmania and South Australia increased by 11.3% and 3.8% respectively.

This issue presents details for the Sales of New Motor Vehicles for January 2013.


DATA NOTES

The flooding which occurred in Thailand in from June 2011 may have had an impact on new vehicle sales in Australia due to associated delays in delivery of Thai manufactured vehicles and vehicle parts. The impacts from the flooding is no longer affecting the supply of new motor vehicles to Australia from Thailand.
