BUILDING WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate of the value of total building work done rose 0.9% in the September 2013 quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of total building work done rose 1.6% to $21,124.3m in the September quarter, following a rise of 1.2% in the June 2013 quarter.


NEW RESIDENTIAL BUILDING WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 0.4% in the September quarter. The value of work done on new houses fell 1.7%, while new other residential building rose 3.7%.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 1.3% to $10,602.2m. Work done on new houses fell 0.4% to $6,336.3m, while new other residential building rose 3.8% to $4,265.9m.


NON-RESIDENTIAL WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate of the value of non-residential building work done rose 1.5% in the September quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of non-residential building work done in the quarter rose 3.0%, following a rise of 1.8% in the June 2013 quarter.

TOTAL DWELLINGS
  • The trend estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced fell 0.6% in the September 2013 quarter following a fall of 0.2% in the June quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced fell 2.0% to 40,331 dwellings in the September quarter following a rise of 1.8% in the June quarter.


NEW PRIVATE SECTOR HOUSES
  • The trend estimate for new private sector house commencements rose 1.9% in the September quarter following a rise of 1.4% in the June quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector house commencements rose 0.9% to 23,734 dwellings in the September quarter following a rise of 6.1% in the June quarter.


NEW PRIVATE SECTOR OTHER RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
  • The trend estimate for new private sector other residential building commencements fell 3.4% in the September quarter following a fall of 1.9% in the June quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector other residential building fell 7.6% to 15,277 dwellings in the September quarter following a fall of 0.2% in the June quarter.

This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 27 November 2013. The data in this publication are based on a response rate of approximately 91% of the value of building work done during the quarter. The data are subject to revision when returns from the following quarter are processed. Final data for the September quarter 2013 will be released in the next release of this publication, Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 16 April 2014.

A readily printable (PDF) publication is no longer released for this issue. Headline data items are presented in HTML format. Data series in the Time Series Spreadsheets are maintained and produced to the same timetable currently in place for this release.


SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS ISSUE

Compared to the estimate published in Building Activity, Australia, June quarter 2013 (cat. no. 8752.0) released on 11 October 2013:
  • the total value of work done in Australia during June quarter 2013 has been revised upwards by $261.5m or 1.3%.
  • the total value of work commenced in Australia during June quarter 2013 has been revised upwards by $1,575.6m or 8.0%. This was driven by revisions to non-residential commencements ($1,156.1m).
  • the number of dwelling unit commencements in the June quarter 2013 has been revised upwards by 1189 dwellings or 3.0%.


DATA NOTE

Several time series spreadsheets contain 'np' (not available for publication) annotations from the September quarter 2012 onwards. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.
