Introduction

This publication contains the final release of the input-output tables for 2004–05. The tables presented here are the final version of the basic transaction tables of the input-output suite of tables (Tables 1-4 and 21-38). These have been revised slightly from the June 2008 releases following feedback from users. Also included are additional tables including requirement coefficients, primary input content, specialisation & coverage ratios and employment by industry (Tables 5 to 20).

Input-output tables are part of the Australian national accounts, complementing the quarterly and annual series of national income, expenditure and product aggregates. They provide detailed information about the supply and use of products in the Australian economy and about the structure of and inter-relationships between Australian industries.

With the release of tables for 2004–05, the ABS has completed 20 input-output tables for Australia. Previous tables were for 1958–59, 1962–63, 1968–69, 1974–75, for each year from 1977–78 to 1983–84, 1986–87, 1989–90, 1992–93 to 1994–95, 1996–97, 1998–99 and 2001-02. Commencing with the 1974–75 tables, an estimation methodology involving a combination of clerical and mathematical estimation techniques was introduced and it has been used in compiling the current tables.

Tables

A list of the 2004–05 input-output tables available in this release can be accessed by clicking the downloads tab. They include tables that record input by industry, output by product group and margin matrices.

The structure of the tables, with 109 product and industry groups, and the underlying methodology used in their construction has been kept consistent with the 2001-02 input-output tables release.

Explanatory notes and classifications are available in electronic form.
