AGE DISTRIBUTION

At 30 June 2003, the estimated resident population of NSW was 6,687,000. There were 3,322,000 males and 3,365,000 females. This represented an increase of 26,200 males and 26,500 females since 30 June 2002. In 2003, approximately 19.9% of the NSW population was aged 0-14 years, 66.8% was aged 15-64 years and a further 13.3% was aged 65 years and over. This has changed slightly from 2002 when 20.2% were aged 0-14 years, 66.6% were aged 15-64 years and 13.2% were aged 65 years and over.

MEDIAN AGE

The median age is the age which divides the relevant population into two equal parts. That is, half of the relevant population will be younger than the median age and the other half will be older. The median age of the NSW population at 30 June 2003 was 36.4 years; 35.6 years for males and 37.1 years for females. Since 2002, the median ages of males and females have both increased by 0.2 years.

At 30 June 2003, the Mid-North Coast Statistical Division (SD) had the highest median ages (41.3 years for males and 42.4 years for females), while both Sydney and Murrumbidgee SD had the lowest median age for males (both 34.6 years) and Sydney SD had the lowest median age for females (35.9 years).

The Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) with the highest median ages for males occurred in Great Lakes (A) (47.4 years), Nundle (A) (46.6 years) and Bingara (A) (46.4 years). The highest median ages for females at 30 June 2003 were Barraba (A) (49.6 years), Great Lakes (A) (48.9 years) and Bingara (A) (47.1 years). SLAs with the lowest median age for males were Armidale Dumaresq (A) - City (29.4 years), Blacktown (C) - South-West (29.5 years) and Campbelltown (C) (30.1 years). SLAs with the lowest median age for females were Newcastle (C) - Inner (29.6 years), Bourke (A) (30.5 years) and Brewarrina (A) (30.6 years).

POPULATION AGED 0-14 YEARS

At 30 June 2003, there were 1,334,000 children aged 0-14 years in NSW. The proportion of children aged 0-14 years declined in all SDs between 2002 and 2003. In June 2003, Sydney SD had the lowest proportion of children (19.4%) in NSW. Within Sydney SD, the SLAs with the lowest proportions of children were Sydney (C) - Inner (7.3%), Sydney (C) - Remainder (8.4%), South Sydney (C) (9.1%), North Sydney (A) (9.7%) and Leichhardt (A) (12.8%). The SLAs within Sydney SD with the highest proportions of children were Blacktown (C) - South-West (27.5%), Camden (A) (25.8%), Campbelltown (C) (24.7%), Liverpool (C); (24.5%) and Wollondilly (A) (24.4%).

Outside of Sydney, all SDs had a higher proportion of children than NSW as a whole. The SLAs outside of Sydney with the highest proportions of children were Bourke (A) (27.9%), Brewarrina (A) (27.5%), Cobar (A) (25.5%), Coonamble (A) (25.3%), Moree Plains (A) (24.5%) and Muswellbrook (A) (24.5%). The SLAs with the lowest proportions of children aged 0-14 years were Newcastle (C) - Inner (8.0%), Nundle (A) (15.8%), Barraba (A) (16.4%), Lord Howe Island (A) (16.5%) and Great Lakes (A) (16.9%).

POPULATION AGED 15-64 YEARS

Persons aged 15-64 years (the working age group) made up 66.8% of the resident population of NSW in 2003 (compared to 66.6% in 2002). Between 2002 and 2003, the SDs of Richmond-Tweed, Central West and Mid-North Coast experienced the greatest increases in the proportion of their populations aged 15-64 years.

In Sydney SD, persons aged 15-64 years made up 68.6% of the population at 30 June 2003. However, in all other SDs, the proportion of the population in this age group was lower than the NSW level. Within the Sydney SD, the SLAs with the lowest proportions in this age group were Wyong (A) (60.8%), Gosford (C) (62.2%), Bankstown (C) (64.6%), Ku-ring-gai (A) (64.6%) and Hunter's Hill (C) (65.4%). The SLAs with the highest proportions in this age group were Sydney (C) - Remainder (83.1%), Sydney (C) - Inner (82.4%), South Sydney (C) (81.1%), North Sydney (A) (78.7%) and Leichhardt (A) (77.6%).

In Sydney SD, the highest proportions of males in the working age group were clustered in inner city SLAs. These SLAs included Sydney (C) - Inner (45.9%), South Sydney (C) (44.7%) and Sydney (C) - Remainder (44.6%). The lowest proportions of males in the working age group occurred in Wyong (A) (29.8%), Gosford (C) (30.8%) and Ku-ring-gai (A) (31.3%). In Sydney SD, the SLAs with the highest proportions of females in the working age group were North Sydney (A) (40.5%), Leichhardt (A) (39.9%) and Sydney (C) - Remainder (38.5%). The SLAs with the lowest proportions of females were Hunter's Hill (A) (30.5%), Wyong (A) (31.0%) and Gosford (C) (31.4%).

Outside Sydney SD, the SLAs with the lowest proportions of persons aged 15-64 years were Tweed (A) - Pt A (57.3%), Great Lakes (A) (57.6%), Maclean (A) (58.1%), Hastings (A) - Pt A (58.4%), Bingara (A) (58.6%) and Shoalhaven (C) - Pt B (58.6%). The SLAs with the highest proportions of persons aged 15-64 years, outside of Sydney SD, were Newcastle (C) - Inner (80.8%), Unincorporated Far West (74.6%), Yarrowlumla (A) - Pt B (74.1%), Yarrowlumla (A) - Pt (A) (70.7%) and Snowy River (A) (70.0%).

POPULATION AGED 65 AND OVER

The total number of persons aged 65 years and over increased from 875,100 in 2002 to 889,500 in 2003 (an increase of 14,400). At 30 June 2003, there were 495,100 females and 394,400 males aged 65 years and over in NSW. The proportion of the population aged 65 years and over has increased slightly from 13.2% in 2002 to 13.3% in 2003.

Of all SDs in NSW, Mid-North Coast (18.6%), Richmond-Tweed (17.4%) and Far West (17.2%) had the highest proportions of persons aged 65 years and over in both 2003 and 2002. Sydney SD had the lowest proportion of persons aged 65 years and over (12.0%) in NSW at 30 June 2003, followed by North Western SD (13.3%) and Murrumbidgee SD (13.5%).

Within Sydney SD, the SLAs with the lowest proportions of population aged 65 years and over were Blacktown (A) - North (6.0%), Blacktown (C) - South-West (6.5%), Campbelltown (C) (6.7%), Penrith (C) (7.3%) and Liverpool (C) (7.6%). The SLAs with the highest proportions of persons aged 65 years and over outside Sydney SD were Tweed (A) - Pt A (25.6%), Great Lakes (A) (25.5%) and Barraba (A) (23.6%).

Of all SLAs with 20% or more of their population aged 65 years and over, eight were located on the coast and six were located in inland NSW. Of the ten SLAs with the lowest proportions of their population aged 65 years and over, eight were in Sydney SD and two were in inland SDs. These were Yarrowlumla (A) - Pt A (6.8%) and Unincorporated Far West (8.4%).

SEX RATIO

At 30 June 2003, there were 98.7 males for every 100 females in NSW. This was the same as the sex ratio in 2002. The sex ratio was highest in 2003 in the 0-14 year age group, with 105.5 males for every 100 females. However as age increased, the sex ratio decreased. The ratio of males to females was almost even for those aged 15-64 years (101.0). However, for the age group 65 years and over the sex ratio was 79.6 (the lowest sex ratio, 45.2 males per 100 females, occurred in the 85 years and over age group).

North Western SD had the highest sex ratio of all SDs in NSW at 102.1 males for every 100 females. In Sydney SD there were 98.4 males for every 100 females. The lowest sex ratios were in Richmond-Tweed and Mid-North Coast SDs where there were 97.2 and 97.4 males respectively for every 100 females. There were also more females than males in Hunter SD (98.5), Illawarra SD (99.1), Northern SD (99.3) and Far West SD (99.9).

In Sydney SD, the highest sex ratios occurred in Sydney (C) - Inner (123.9), South Sydney (C) (117.7) and Sydney (C) - Remainder (113.8). Of the five lowest SLA sex ratios in NSW, three occurred in Sydney SD. These included Mosman (A) (88.6), Woollahra (A) (89.1), and North Sydney (A) (91.0).
