ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication contains estimates of the quantity of grain held in grain storage facilities operated by the major bulk grain handling companies and grain traders in Australia as at 31 March 2007.

KEY POINTS

The total quantity of grain held in storage facilities operated by the major bulk grain handling companies at 31 March 2007 was 11.6 million tonnes. This decrease of 1.5 million tonnes, or 11.5%, from the February level was the result of continuing decreases in stocks of most grain types. Wheat had the largest absolute decrease of 1.0 million tonnes.

Graph: Stocks of Grain, Australia

Following a considerable fall during the previous month, stocks of grain in the category of sorghum, other feed grains and pulses remained steady in March as the summer harvest arrived. Current stocks of total grain are similar to that held at 31 March 2003 (13.0 million tonnes), but are less than half of the stocks held on 31 March 2004 (25.2 million tonnes).
