KEY POINTS


Wheat grain stored by state
  • All states registered a decrease in stocks of wheat grain stored in May 2012. The largest fall in stocks of wheat grain stored occurred in New South Wales where a decrease of 931 thousand tonnes (or 17%) from the end of April 2012 was recorded.
  • The largest quantity of wheat grain was stored in Western Australia with 6.6 million tonnes that accounted for 41% of the Australian total. New South Wales (including ACT) was next largest with 4.4 million tonnes contributing 28% of national stocks.

Wheat grain stored, Australia
  • Australia's bulk storage of wheat grain in May 2012 decreased by 3 million tonnes (16%) to 15.9 million tonnes. This was 634 thousand tonnes (or 4%) higher than in May 2011.

Wheat grain stored by grade
  • Stocks of wheat grain for milling in May 2012 were 11.2 million tonnes which was 70% of all grain stored. This was a decline of 1.9 million tonnes (or 14%) since April 2012 and an increase of 2.8 million tonnes (34%) compared to May 2011.
  • At the end of May 2012, feed grade wheat grain stocks were 4.8 million tonnes (30% of all grain stored) which was a decrease of 1.1 million tonnes (19%) from April 2012. Compared to May 2011 feed grade wheat grain stocks were down by 2.2 million tonnes (31%).
