INTRODUCTION

This information paper describes the processes undertaken by the ABS to quality assure the rebasing of Australia's official population estimates following the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. The paper forms part of ABS' strategy to enhance the transparency, accessibility and understanding of Australia's official population statistics.

This edition is the first in a series of releases by the ABS. The current release focuses on the compilation of 2011 preliminary estimated resident population (ERP) estimates, by State and Territory, that were released by the ABS on 20 June 2012. Future releases will focus on the:

    • compilation of 2011 preliminary ERP by sub-State geographies;
    • compilation of 2011 preliminary ERP for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous populations; and
    • the process from preliminary to final 2011 ERP estimates.
