AUSTRALIAN STANDARD GEOGRAPHICAL CLASSIFICATION (ASGC) - 2011

ELECTRONIC STRUCTURES

The Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) is a hierarchical classification system of geographical areas and consists of a number of interrelated structures. It provides a common framework of statistical geography and enables the production of statistics which are comparable.

The ASGC 2011 is the final edition and has a date of effect of 1 July 2011. From 2011 onwards the ABS will use a new statistical geography called the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).

The product Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) - Electronic Structures, July 2011 (cat. no. 1216.0.15.001) contains four comma delimited text files showing the levels and hierarchy of those ASGC structures current for the edition: the Main Structure, the Statistical Region Structure, the Statistical District Structure and the Local Government Area Structure.

Any inquiries regarding the Classification can be made by contacting the Geography Section by email geography@abs.gov.au or by writing to Locked Bag 10, Belconnen, ACT 2616.
