INTRODUCTION

In the final report from the inquiry conducted by the Standing Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport into “Climate change and the Australian agricultural sector”, December 2008, it was noted that submissions "highlighted the vulnerability of Australian agriculture to climate change" and identified and discussed strategies "that are available to farmers in order to adapt to changing climate conditions".

In order to provide policy makers, researchers and the community with an insight into the views of farm managers on changes to the climate, the effect of these changes, and the adaptability of farm managers to such changes, the ABS' 2006-07 Natural Resource Management (NRM) Survey included a number of questions designed to inform on these topics. Results were released in September 2008 in Farm Management and Climate, 2006-07 (cat. no. 4625.0).

To put the survey results into context, further analysis was performed to identify key associations between perceptions of a change in climate and the characteristics of the managers and/or the farm businesses being managed. This paper presents the findings of this analysis.

The ABS welcomes feedback on this analysis in terms of its relevance, usefulness and quality. Please send any comments to karen.connaughton@abs.gov.au or phone (02) 6252 5337.
