TREND
  • The trend estimate of the total value of building work commenced was flat in the March quarter 2008.
  • The value of new residential building commenced rose 1.1%. New house commencements rose 0.5% and new other residential commencements rose 2.1%. The value of commencements for alterations and additions to residential buildings rose 0.6%. The value of non-residential building fell by 1.5%.

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, the estimate of the total value of building work commenced in the March quarter fell 7.7% from the revised December 2007 quarter estimate.
  • Commencements of new residential buildings rose 1.6%, to $8,823.4m. New house commencements fell 4.6%, to $6,037.5m, while new other residential building rose 5.6%, to $2,785.9m. Alterations and additions fell 7.2%, to $1,566.6m. Non-residential work commenced fell 14.8%, to $6,535.5m from the revised December quarter estimate.
