SUMMARY COMMENTS

The trend estimate for total dwellings approved rose 0.5% in December 2010. The trend fell in South Australia (-2.3%), Tasmania (-2.3%) and the Northern Territory (-12.0%) while the other states and territories all increased. In seasonally adjusted terms the estimate of total dwellings approved rose 8.7% with New South Wales (16.7%), Victoria (11.4%) and Tasmania (9.9%) recording the largest increases of the published states and territories. Queensland (-5.7%) and Western Australia (-4.2%) showed decreases this month.

The trend estimate for private sector houses approved fell 0.3% this month. Of the published states, South Australia (-2.5%), Victoria (-0.4%) and Western Australia (-0.3%) experienced falls while New South Wales (0.6%) rose.
