CHANGES TO THIS PUBLICATION

This release of 2013-14 data is the first of the annual data collection and release activities for the STA. From 1 July 2013 the collection frequency of the STA moved from quarterly to annual, on a financial year basis. This release includes the four quarters of the 2013-14 financial year, that is September quarter 2013, December quarter 2013, March quarter 2014 and June quarter 2014.

Change to data items

The collection of 'persons employed' and 'guest arrivals' data has been ceased. This has resulted in the three data items of 'persons employed', 'guest arrivals' and 'average length of stay' (as guest arrivals are required to derive this item) no longer being available from the STA and therefore will no longer be included in releases. The data items of 'guest nights available' and 'room nights available' which were previously available on a consultancy only basis have now been incorporated into the annual STA release.

Change to star gradings

Accommodation class data has replaced star gradings data (known as star ratings by industry) in this publication, however the star grading categories can be fully mapped to the new Accommodation class categories. The Accommodation class mappings are:

  • Budget: one and two star rated establishments or equivalent
  • Mid scale: three star rated establishments or equivalent
  • Upscale: four star rated establishments or equivalent
  • Luxury: five star rated establishments or equivalent

From the 2013-14 financial year, each establishment has been assigned an accommodation class by the ABS. This is based on the establishment's self-rating or facilities available and as a result there is no longer an 'ungraded' category.

Change to location of data

This release incorporates the current ten separate product releases into one release. All data from the STA is now accessible through Tourist Accommodation, Australia (cat. no. 8635.0). The individual Australia, state and territory releases have been discontinued. This annual release contains monthly and quarterly data by type of establishment and Accommodation class. Data is available for each state/territory and Australia, and by Tourism Region and Statistical Area Level 2. Details of the new location of data (including the small area data that was previously included in the state tables) is in the table below:
