Retail Trade up 0.4% in January 2011

The latest ABS Retail Trade figures show that Australian retail turnover rose 0.4% in January 2011, seasonally adjusted, following a rise of 0.2% the previous month.

Food retailing (2.5%), other retailing (2.1%) and department stores (2.3%) recorded rises in January 2011. Turnover fell in household goods retailing (-4.6%), clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-2.5%) and cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (-0.3%).

Turnover rose in Western Australia (2.7%), South Australia (2.4%), Queensland (0.3%), the Northern Territory (4.7%), the Australian Capital Territory (2.2%) and New South Wales (0.1%). Turnover fell in Victoria (-1.0%) and Tasmania (-1.0%).

Trend turnover remained relatively unchanged (0.0%) in January 2011. This follows relatively unchanged estimates in December 2010 (0.0%) and November 2010 (0.0%). Trend Turnover rose 2.0% in January 2011 compared with January 2010.
