ABOUT OUR WORK

ABS mining statistics
Mining statistics produced by the ABS fulfil a dual role: they feed into national accounts statistics and thus contribute to the overall assessment of Australia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Gross Value Added (GVA); and they are published for the benefit of external users including the mining industry and researchers. The ABS takes very seriously, the need for reliable, accurate and useful data. In order to continually assess the strategic value of its mining statistics, the ABS takes an active role in understanding the industry, via:
  • Representation at meetings and fora where mining clients and stakeholders come together to discuss their information needs;
  • Undertaking of discrete analytical projects, such as developing national economic indicators of mining;
  • Constant scrutiny of ABS web materials;
  • Contribution of ABS views on international standards and classifications relevant to mining;
  • Continual assessment of effectiveness of communication with mining stakeholders and clients;

  • Development of relevant ABS surveys by consulting with mining stakeholders; and
  • Monitoring developments and emerging issues in the mining industry.

The ABS also strives to coordinate the various areas that contribute to mining statistics. These areas of the ABS include, but are not limited to, National Accounts, Balance of Payments, and Labour Force.
