NOTES

INTRODUCTION

This release presents counts of Australian businesses and is sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Business Register (ABSBR).

This is the eighth update to Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits (cat no 8165.0), initially released in February 2007.

This series replaces all previous business counts releases, which can be found under the 'Past and Future Releases' tab.

CHANGES FROM THE PREVIOUS RELEASE

Changes to confidentialisation
A new confidentiality methodology has been implemented for this release of CABEE. The change has been made to enhance the current process and improve consistency across the data. The new methodology aligns with existing ABS confidentiality procedures and maximises the availability of data without introducing bias to the counts.

ASGS changes
In July 2016, an update to the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) was released. The update has resulted in a greater number of Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2s) in this publication than in previous releases. Due to growth and change in Australia's population and infrastructure, and the need to maintain the standard design of SA2s (containing 3,000 - 25,000 people), 62 SA2s from 2011 ASGS were split, 6 SA2s were amalgamated and a number of boundaries were adjusted in the 2016 ASGS. For the first time it also includes the Territory of Norfolk Island, due to an amendment to the Acts Interpretation Act 1901, as an SA2 under the category of 'Other Territories'. See the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) 2016 Changes appendix in this publication for a summary of the changes or see Appendix 2: ASGS Coding and Labelling Changes in Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS): Volume 1 - Main Structure and Greater Capital City Statistical Areas, July 2016 (cat. no. 1270.0.55.001).

Standard Institutional Sector Classification of Australia (SISCA)
Since the previous CABEE publication the ABS has made improvements to coding SISCA classification for businesses. As a result a small number of units (less than 0.5%) will have moved between institutional sectors. Of these movements, the most significant are units moving from ‘Financial Corporations’ into ‘Households’. For consistency, the new SISCA derivation is used across all reference years in the publication. Therefore counts of ‘Institutional Sector’ for the same reference year in previous publications will not align. For more information, users should refer to Standard Economic Sector Classifications of Australia (SESCA) (cat. no. 1218.0).

FUTURE RELEASES

The next release of Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits (cat no 8165.0) is scheduled for February 2018. Future data and metadata released in Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits (cat no 8165.0) are expected to be published on the ABS website in Excel spreadsheet and HTML webpage formats. ABS is also exploring the possibility of publishing the latest 2016 data on Survey Tablebuilder.
